NPA 2010

This year I have started my search for the art school I want to attend after I get my ATA at edmonds. I haven't looked anywhere outside the west coast, just because I get resident tuition for either Cornish or Otis because of the whole parent's being divorced and living in 2 different states deal. This year I have also decided to attend National Portfolio Day so that all the credible art colleges in the US come to me, instead of the other way around.
I encourage all prospective art student (Cornish's term) to come to this event too. I mean it's a free critique session from art professors all around the US. and they have a student gallery for an inspiration pick-me-up too!
So, now that I have my work and school schedule balanced off of eachother, I need to get some studio time in and make a mess out of my living room floor for the next couple of months and get my portfolio together. I just need a good peer critique and I'm good to go.

To all of my talented friends: take advantage of this with me!

Not quite ready for DA

As mentioned in the previous post, I've purchased a Holga (on sale at UO) and have had a lot of fun with my first roll which was purely experimental. It's an awesome little camera and I was amazed by the photo quality. Although I didn't like any of the pictures enough to post up on DA so here are some I LIKED but didn't quite LOVE.
I also let Silvia have some fun with it.

The rest can be seen on my facebook!

(p.s. expect some photos from CA!)

My new love for lamography

Lamography: The art of spontinuety in photography.

I've recently bought a fish eye and a holga and have fallen in love with them both!
Taking them out almost everyday, I've found that the best ones are of very mundane things that I wouldn't normally stop and look at.

Everything and Everyone is beautiful.

My first series...

came after I made this piece. I felt like it was one of the strongest pieces I've ever made, but wasn't strong enough on it's own. So about 3 months afterwards I played around with different parts of the body and decided that the skull and ribcage would be a good match. I also felt that these accenting pieces should be alot bigger than the middle piece so that I could scale it bigger than actual size. So I set out to clip every funnies page I could find and scavange up some blank tapes at the local thrift store. The day before "Art Attack", the art show I hosted as part of my senior project, I finished up these pieces and was so relieved that I actually had the series done in time to display it. Larger photos of each piece are on my Deviant Art profile.

My one and only succesful shoot.

During the summer, there was this beautiful little yellow house next to my apartment complex which was unfortunatly foreclosed and torn down to build this stupid townhomes. They didn't touch this lot all summer, so I took my little sister outside to play around with these record masks I made. we took about 60 shots in and around the lot, and these are three of my favorites.

these aren't edited at all, only because my computer is incapable of functioning properly when photoshop is up. So, until I get a laptop and upload photoshop on it...they will remain unedited.

The piece I am most proud of...

I don't remember when I made this but probably some time in march. I saw and fell in love with the film "Across the Universe" which, if you don't know already, is inspired by The Beatles music. I saw this movie twice in theaters and bought a copy of the 2-disc edition dvd and 2-disc edition soundtrack. The music was done beautifully and with a lot of respect to the orignials. My favorite track was the remake of the song Across the Universe. This specific still from the movie connected with this song, made me peaceful. I loved the fact that they were underwater and the color distortion of this still was really cool so I remade it mixing pen and ink and acrylic paint. It took me about 2 weeks to make, which is a record for me ( It usually takes me a day or 2 to paint a piece of artwork) I was so proud of it when I was done! It's now being displayed in Matt Verzola's room. It felt like a right fit, a work that makes me feel at peace hung in a place that makes me feel the same way.

3 words I am growing to hate.

"Are you ok?"

I'm fine alright?
maybe not today or at this very moment, but I will be.
and you asking me if I'm ok doesn't make me feel ok...I'm going to be fine without anyone's help and/or sympathy
I am in the process of fixing my own problems, like I should be.
if you were in my situation right now,
where everyday you have to take a chunk out of the way you are...
evaluate it and realize it's in no way shape or form benefiting you or others around you
but in reality hurting you and others around you
then throwing that away
and slowly having to rebuild that chunk of yourself the right way
would you be ok?
this is directed at nobody in particular, just the phrase I've been getting from every direction.
so do me a favor and leave that sentence out when having a conversation with me.
do yourself a favor and avoid me having to lie to your face with a smile and a peppy "yeah!"

the answer is no, I'm not ok. but I will be eventually.
